It’s Here… at Last!

“Without a song, the day would never end; without a song, a man ain’t got  a friend; without a song, the road would never bend. Without a song…”

-Quote from Elvis Presley

I have always loved all kinds of music from country to rock to Motown to do-wop to gospel to pop and later heavy metal (and yes, I had the hair to match).  Growing up, my parents loved Elvis, Hank Williams Jr., Buddy Holly, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Credence Clearwater Revival. There were more, but these are the main artists I remember listening to and not being able to stop myself from singing or dancing along with each song.  On weekends especially, I remember my parents, brother and I cleaning the house or working on projects, always with a record playing in the background.  I also remember listening to music on car rides and long trips.

Music has always been a huge part of my life and certain songs are like great books or movies – they touch my heart and stir something within. Music can pick me up when I am feeling down and when I hear a song that reflects my life and feelings, it becomes an instant favorite. When I need some motivation to workout or clean, I blast some of my favorite music and do my thing.  It always helps me to get through something I would otherwise not enjoy.

Country music has been my favorite genre of music for the last 10-15 years.  The hairbands that got me through high school  and boyfriends and break-ups are now gone and I am not a fan of most of today’s pop music. Not that it’s all bad, I like some of it. However, I find myself changing the station after about two songs to find something else.  I could not believe when I moved to North Jersey that there was not any type of country station. I missed Cat Country 96, my favorite station where I lived in Pennsylvania and relied heavily on other music sources each day. I did not really listen to the radio… until now!  It has arrived!  A new country music station, NASH 94.7, launched out of New York City last week.  Whooooo Hoooooo!  Or should I say YEEEEEEEE HAAWWWWWWW!   So far, I love it. There are very few commercials, great music and a variety of songs and artists.  I am so happy.  (As I write this, I am listening to Toby Keith’s “I Ain’t As Good as I Once Was” – I can relate.) That’s what I love about country.  It can make the listener cry, think, laugh, smile, remember and sing and dance around unabashedly.   For the record, I admit, I do still sing to my hairbrush or wooden spoon and dance around the house like I  did when I was 12 when I hear a song that I love. I can’t help it. It just moves me.   Thank God my husband loves me unconditionally.  And thankfully, he loves country, too.

So, while we wait for the Super Bowl to begin, we will listen to 94.7, sing and dance and get ready to watch America’s game. After listening to some good old (and new) American music.
